Thirty stories offer a lively and lusty portrait of 16th-century French life and manners. Balzac's fables recall the tradition of Boccaccio and Rabelais, abounding in episodes of good-humored licentiousness.
The Attack on the Mill
The novel takes place during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, and the whole story takes place in and around Merlier’s mill and shows the effects of war on civilians. Running through the story is quite a typical nineteenth century love story, where Fran?oise is forced to decide whether her father or her lover lives.
The Two Orphans
Adolphe Philippe d'Ennery or Dennery (1811-1899) was a French dramatist and novelist. He obtained his first success in collaboration with Charles Desnoyer in Emile, ou le fils d'un pair de France (1831), a drama which was the first of a series of some two hundred pieces written alone or in collaboration with other dramatists.
